What Is a Transformer Bushing?

A transformer bushing is a critical electrical insulation component designed to allow a high-voltage conductor to pass safely through the grounded transformer tank. It provides electrical insulation between the energized conductor and the transformer enclosure while maintaining reliable mechanical support and protection against environmental conditions.

Transformer bushings are widely used in power transformers, distribution transformers, oil immersed transformers, dry type transformers, substations, and high voltage electrical systems. They play an essential role in ensuring safe power transmission, preventing electrical breakdown, and improving transformer operating reliability.

In a power transformer system, the transformer bushing connects the internal winding conductor to external electrical circuits. Because the bushing operates under high electrical stress, it must provide excellent insulation performance, mechanical strength, and long-term stability.
